A goal worth while + what to expect when you’re running your first HALF MARATHON

HELLO my friends! the Team freedom blog has been at such a standstill- but I promise its all for good reason! I’ve spent the last week, recovering from our half marathon, which by the way was AMAZING! and I’m super excited to post the story about it here today. How are you all? I hope you’re doing well- I’ve missed you. IT’s totally NOVEMBER….

Well, my goal this year as many of you know was to complete a HALF MARATHON (ps I’ve decided to write it all in caps every time I say it in this post haha- you know- for effect)

and it’s DONE. Mark and I decided to register for the Saints and Sinners HALF MARATHON and it was SO MUCH FUN! I had first heard of this race from my sweet friend Megan, you can read about her running story here on the TF blog… I’ll post it below 🙂 So Megan asked us if we wanted to run it- and I hemmed and haw’d a bit before actually registering. But once I did, it was GAME ON.

The race was in Henderson, Nevada- just east of Las Vegas… about a 5 hour drive out for us. ROAD TRIP TIME! We kissed out kiddos goodbye and left them with my parents and set off on Friday afternoon for our little (BIG) adventure. We hit some major nasty traffic, blech, and made it to NV about 2 hours later then planned.  No big- Mark and I went on a romantic shopping trip to Super Target (sigh) and to the market to buy something for breakfast for race day!

Saturday morning came, and I was UP at 4:30am- I was so freaking excited, I couldn’t wait. Also- I was so nervous, I thought I might puke…. We drove about 20 minutes to where the race began and met up with our besties Megan and Scott, and their family. We were frozen…. When you think of the desert in October- what do you think of? I didn’t think cold. But I was frozen.

Megan and I tried to snuggle together to keep warm.

We met some fun people who were running a HALF MARATHON for the first time too! That felt better…And then, it was time!

There was a gun start and a chip timer attached to our bib numbers…

so when it went off I was SO EXCITED! Mark keep telling me to “take it easy” and “don’t rush it too much”so I tried to not go too fast.

And then..

mile after mile- we ran. Like the wind.

I finished a 10K without really thinking about it, and without walking. WHAT the? That’s never happened before…

And then we hit the incline. And the loose gravel/dirt road that we were supposed to run on for 4.4 miles. ha. ouch. owie. broken ankles (ok- not really, but they hurt so bad)

The event photog was at the top of the tunnels that we were running though, and I wanted him to get a good shot- so I sucked it up, stood up as straight as I could and blew by him, hoping he would snap a shot that was blog-worthy. Not so much.

But on the way back down, we stopped to 2 seconds for him to shoot this one of Mark and I…

yeah, those are old abandoned train tunnels we ran though! Hard core, right?

The last two miles were heaven and hell. Seriously- I was so done.

I kept threatening to cry, and Mark would just hold my hand and say “i am SO proud of you, you’ve been working on this for so long, don’t give up now”… and that worked.

At the very last mile, we came up to these two runners that we had seen at the starting line. They were wearing Halloween costumes, which was allowed by the race staff, although- the girls’ costume was kinda questionable in my opinion. A little too much backside showing….

I was not going to finish MY race behind her.

So I dug down, so deep- thought nothing about how bad my ankles were hurting. I didn’t think about anything else but running. FAST. Kicked that girl in the hoochie costume’s trash. Yep.

And the nest thing I knew, we were crossing the finish line!!!! Sweet glory. It was all done.

Here are the rockstar Tanners!!! I want to be fast like them!! 🙂

Now- here’s the stuff that you don’t know before running a HALF:

it’s far.

haha. ok that was dumb.

-It’s a lot farther than you think! The next time you get in the car to run errands around town, clock your miles- I bet you on an average day, you don’t drive 13 miles to get to where you wanna go. It’s an awesome distance. And yes, for now- that’s the farthest I’ll be going in a race. I’m only HALF CRAZY.

-They tell you not to sit down just after you finish your race, something about your muscles cramping… I dunno because I felt like I was going to become leg-less if I didn’t sit down. The surges of shocks running through my calves and thighs was incredible. (it’s only been a week- I still remember) They give you chocolate milk to help with muscle cramps, genius. I love chocolate milk. And I downed 3 of them.

-But nothing will prepare you for the next day.

After the race:

This was me after we got back to our hotel.

All I wanted to do was curl up and fall asleep. I think my brain was overloaded.

I just did it. I just ran a HALF MARATHON. and I’m alive!!!! I’m an athlete!!! I used to HATE running, and I DID IT. I. FREAKING. DID. IT!!

Mark let me sleep for a few (ok 4 hours) and then, I woke up and we got dressed up to go out and celebrate the victory won!

We headed to the Las Vegas strip and were so excited to try the AMAZING buffet (that was recommended to use by several people) at the Aria hotel. We got all the way there, starving… and….. it’s closed for construction.

really? really? I was about to eat my own arm off.

So next we took the awesome little tram thingy to the Bellagio.

Made a Bee-line to the buffet and ate and ate and ATE. I was so happy after that. Food will do that for you.

I also realized after I calculated the race, that I burned something like 1800 calories. shut the front door… that’s more than I eat in a day, so you know I was excited for that buffet!

Sunday Morning:

Woke up- excited to get home and be with our girls. I stepped out of the bed and the moment I did, I realized that my body hated me.

My legs, stomach, bum and feet were SO mad at what I had put them through- and they were not going to let me forget it.

Not even my beloved BIOfreeze could help.

So we schlept our stuff to the car, and made the trek home. Thank goodness for Mark because he’s an amazing traveler and driver (among other things) but he just let me relax the entire time. I’ve never been that sore in my life- but it was the kind of sore that reminds you just how awesome you are…and what you just accomplished. 🙂 yesssssssss.

How was it? Amazing?

Will I do it again? Yes- even though half way through the race I declared that I would never do it again… I’ve changed my mind.

Do I recommend running a HALF MARATHON to anyone? Sure! Don’t laugh- I was seriously the girl that would fake an illness to get out of running in P.E as a kid. If I can do this- anyone can do it. It’s hard. It hurts. It’s rewarding. But you can’t feel that unless you try.

You won’t know unless you let it all go and push yourself.

You are stronger than you think!

Thank you to everyone for their support this year. When I first decided to make my goal at the beginning of the year, I think I doubted myself- a lot. And I know that there were ups and downs, but ultimately, I overcame them and it was because of all of you! Especially Mark. Thank you hub. I cannot thank you enough- You’re my hero, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you! Thank you to our little girlies. When I felt weak, Mark would say “imagine the girls waiting for you at the finish line” and it would make me stronger. I want my children to be proud of who I am. I want them to know that they can do ANYTHING.

Thanks all. I love you!

Let’s race…..

our weekend happenings

We had a FABULOUS weekend!! We decided to spend the whole weekend relaxing and playing with the girls. 🙂 It was amazing!

Do i have any readers out there who are bowling fans? Anyone? Well, it should be known that I am not much of a lover of renting other people’s shoes, and rolling balls down long aisle ways to knock down pins. I’m just not…AND I always end up chipping or breaking fingernails. c’mon!

my kids LOVE bowling. They can’t get enough of it! And I love my kids, so off we go to BOWL.

It IS pretty darn cute to watch baby F squeal when her ball is hurling down the lane!! She and daddy are pals. We also decided to take advantage of the warm summer sun and dip into the pool! We traveled down to SeaPoint Resort for a little R&R and some splashing! It’s hard to imagine that just a few years ago, I had to WORK every Saturday…. I’m NEVER going back to that crappy schedule!

I love my little family!! Hope that your weekend was just as fun! Now it’s Monday and back to more of a structured schedule! This week is looking to be pretty incredible. Come back tomorrow for some thin-spiration and some yummy recipes later this week! Also a new product feature! Whoo hooooo! Happy Monday freedomers!

Oh what do you do in the SUMMERTIME?

Our little fam bam has been enjoying this summer so much! I love owning our own business because it gives us so much freedom to be with our kids whenever we want to be! (which is a lot 🙂 We’ll take several days and set them aside as “work days” and the girls will have activities that will keep them busy and entertained while we go to work. And then we have PLAY days when we say, ok- time to spend it with the girls, no phones ringing, no emails… everything can wait.

I love those days.

Last week my mom and I took a little trip up the road to our friend Pat’s farm to let the girls get good’n’dirty working outside with the animals. I grabbed my camera and was excited to get some cute shots of them. We had an amazing day playing with the new little baby goat “Brownie” (the girls LOVED that name) haha. Miss S got to feed and water the ponies and the mini horses. And Little F got to play with some baby chicks and one angry duck that scared her half to death- but we won’t mention that…

We finished off the day romping through the fruit orchards and picking YUMMY organic fruits from Pat’s trees. The girls were in HEAVEN.  So was I. We ended up with 15 bags of Valenica Oranges, Haas Avocados and exotic Cherimoya’s (they get their OWN blog post coming soon!) We had a funtastic day and I can’t wait to do more fun outings like this with my girls and Mark. Being outdoors, getting dirty, working with your hands. It’s all good. Thanks to Patty for letting us come and invade her afternoon! We loved spending time with you and all the animals!

glacial mud.

My Favorite treatment, for “me” time. 🙂

If you have the need to de-stress, relax, take a load off and have pretty skin at the same time…. you should totally use what I use. Last week was a doozy. Between being out in the summer sun, wearing lots of sunscreen- of course, and indulging in some not-so-oh-so-healthy treats, I really felt like my skin needed a little pick me up.

Glacial Marine MUD to the rescue! I love this green stuff. It makes me feel like those girls you see in the movies with cucumbers on their eyes, laying near the pool in their towels. Haha..

Here’s what Epoc Glacial Marine Mud will do for your skin: Extract impurities, removes dead skin cells, and rejuvenate damaged skin. Holla! What else do you need to know?

Maybe how to get your mittens on some? Ok, no prob! Here you go:

Make sure if you order you use this Distributor ID to get the best deal: USW8926054

So go gather your girls, pick a chick flick and smother on some Glacial Mud, it’ll be amazing! Invite me too! I’ll be there with bells on!

sometimes our weekends look like this

Living in sunny southern CA has it’s perks. Sometimes we go to the beach in January. Sometimes we like to go watch the Padres play at Petco Park (but not anytime recently, because well, they kinda stink) and sometimes, you just gotta go get your Disneyland fix.

We are so grateful to have grandparents who give us season passes to Disneyland! Our girls are super spoiled because they’ve been more time in their little lives than some adults I know! We LOVE Disneyland.

Last weekend when we had finished all of the errands and the house was clean, Mark looked at me and said “wanna go?” And every time I hear him say that I fall more in love with him! No only because he means

“would you like to go to Disneyland?” but because HE’s the one that brings it up! We love watching the girls eyes light up when we tell them, “WE’RE GOIN to Disneyland” ……..let the screaming begin.

This time while we were there, I decided to take note of how to stay on track with HEALTHY CHOICES while visiting the HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH! It can be done people.

Here are some of the tips I came up with. And these can be applied to any theme park, vacation, long weekend that you may be tempted to “CHEAT” just this once. Don’t do it! Stay on track with some smart ideas!!

  1. Pack you own snacks, you’re not going to get by without them. When everyone else around you is reaching for that sugary snack, you know you can say “no thank you” and reach into your bag for a protein bar or some crunchy almonds.
  2. Bring a lot of water! Keep water bottles with you wherever you go. This may be a dumb suggestion, but before R90, I was not a huge fan of drinking water. Water can help curb cravings especially if it’s a hot day and your body is thirsty, you could mistake it for hunger! That would be sad.
  3. If you know you’re going to splurge and have a treat, make sure it’s at least a healthy one. If there’s some kind of fruit involved, great. Ice cream on the other hand…. maybe share a scoop with someone.
  4. This is a silly tip, but to keep my hands busy from picking up little treats here or there, I like to whip out my iphone and Instagram it up! SERIOUSLY it helps. I’m a huge photo fan, and I love taking pictures of yummy things, so instead of eating them I feel like I can shoot pictures of them and enjoy that same happiness over and over again. So bust out your camera and try to get creative (the only time I would advise against this is if you are prone to give into temptations just by looking at them… this is not the tip for you 🙂
  5. HAVE FUN. Don’t be worried about calorie counting while on a trip with your loved ones. It is, afterall, one day. You’ll most likely be burning calories walking around all day long (I looked it up- it’s about 100 calories/hour if you’re continuously walking) that’s a good workout! Don’t stress everyone out around you by making a big deal out of the fact that you’re trying to eat healthy in a not-so0-healthy environment. You’ll be fine. Use these tips. and make sure that you make it memorable. If you usually dig into one of those carmel apples the size of Montana, and you’re able to say NO thanks to them this time, you rock. If you’re normally the first person in line for cotton candy and you walk by and snap a photo instead, you’re amazing. You can do this. It’s not hard. and you’ll still be able to enjoy your day- promise.

ALL things Mickey and Minnie and fireworks and glittery princesses are fun! Hope you have a magical weekend too! Make sure to make good choices!

Minnie Mouse

 i mean, Mariah

the good, the OK and the downright scarey

Sometimes, when I have a really good day, I feel like I’m on top of the world. Totally standing on the front of the Titantic a la Kate Winslet with the wind in my hair and all that. Somedays are really like that. Good hair days, good kid behavior days. Good workout days. Good closing a really big awesome business deal days. Amazing.

Sometimes, I have good days. You know, nothing too spectacular or blah to report. Just kinda vanilla. (i like vanilla, don’t get me wrong. I especially like french vanilla, because, well… it’s fancy) But just kinda eh, today was an aight kinda day.

And then there are SOME days when you don’t even know what time it is because you went to bed a 2am, and you’re totally zonked and you wake up like the fabulous athlete that you are and you get outta bed at the crack of dawn to make sure to get a run in before your day begins and you work your BUM off, and sweat is pouring down your face and you feel like a model for Nike Women and nothing can stop you now….and then you come back home and realize that you looked like this the entire time you worked out.

Uh, are we running 4 miles or playing football? or is that Mariah or a very scared raccoon?

And you also realize that you’re reposting this gosh-awful picture again because it makes you laugh WAY super hard every time you see it. And you realize how cool you are for doing that because a lot of bloggers out there wouldn’t do it for fear of losing readers, and yet you post it anyway.

And then it’s a GOOD day all over again.

I must really love you guys.

And you better keep reading, because imma give it to you just like it is. straight for the heart (I’m pretty sarcastic if you didn’t know, and I like to make fun or myself)

Make today a GOOOOOOOOD  day! Lots of love from me and my smoldering black eyes,

I’m in Mother’s Day recovery mode.

It’s the day after mother’s day! Let’s go back to bed, shall we?

ok, fine…

So, how’d it go? Presents? Jewelry? Breakfast in bed? A trip to Hawaii? I’m hoping you got all of the above. I got something so wonderful…

Sleep, and time to read a book. Quiet time shhhhhh.

Went also to church and listened to my little brother give his report from his mission. (He just came home after spending two years serving the Lord) He’s amazing. His talk was amazing. amazing.

Wished all the moms in my life happy Mother’s day. 🙂 I have my mom, my mother-in-law, my aunties, my grandmothers (I have 4) 🙂 it’s been a wonderful day!

The girls and Mark picked out a little something they thought I’d like, and they know me too well.

the other day, Ms S asked me, “can we bake some healthy cakes? ”

Yes, yes we can my girl.

I’ve heard that these little silicon cupcake liners are great! Any tips? I’m excited to try them out! When you don’t bake with flour, you tend to get lighter, more airy cupcakes, and when you use a paper liner- they usually get stuck to the cupcake and you rip half of it off while trying to eat it and just blech.

Hope these babies work better 🙂 And the book you see there is both a blessing and the bain of my existence. Ok, that was a little dramatic.

I have been trying for SO long to learn how to bake the perfect French macaroon. Its totally an art, I’m convinced. Because I’m pretty skilled at baking and following directions. I even went out and bought a silpat (french of course) 🙂 silicon baking mat…. and poo. No good macaroons yet.

So, maybe I’ll a new trick in this book 🙂 Thanks to my sweet sweet little girls and my handsome hubby for making my Mother’s day awesome! I’m such a lucky girl to have them be my eternal family.

Lots of love and bisou bisou’s from me (those are kisses- in french, but not “french kisses”) oh, nevermind!

Sundays are my favorite days….

My family and I LOVE our Sunday’s. It’s a definite day of relaxation. In fact, as I type this blog post now- my little angels are sleeping in their beds and dreaming of who knows what kind of pink princesses in castles with cupcakes and cotton candy. Just a guess. They’re pretty girly like that.

But I love Sunday’s because as a couple, Mark and I decided a long time ago that we would use that day to regroup and rest from the previous week and look ahead into the next week’s activities. We also attend our church meetings on Sundays and we visit with family. We deliberately try not to work on Sunday, or do anything that would encourage others to work (ie: shop at the store or go to a restaurant) because we appreciate when others think of us in that way.

So, what are you up to this week? Work? Meetings? Exercising? I hope so! Eating well and LIVING this blessed life you’ve been given. Take some time today to think about your goals for the week. Write them down. Become accountable for your actions and know that no matter what, each day will end and a new day will begin before you know it. I love finding quotes on Pinterest (ps Pinterest is the greatest invention of all time, am I right or am I right?) And I found this one the other day, I just like that you can apply it to so many parts of your life. You can use it to think about your workouts or your eating habits, or you could use it with your emotions. Maybe you had a real duzy of a bad day, but if you think about this little quote, it might help you get over it a bit quicker. Mark and I are also huge fans of the show Biggest Loser and this is part of the theme song for their show.

So, a little food for thought here on the Team Freedom bloggity. Hope you have a happy Sunday and a beautiful start to your week! I’m excited to get to know some of our new readers, so please don’t be shy and say hello! comment below or send me a message…:)
